New Leo Club at NWR7 Commits to Service First

With sponsorship by the New Hartford Lions, the Leo Club at Northwest Region #7 High School in Winsted is breaking new ground in community service. Active since September 2007, the club was officially installed on Nov. 1, 2007, in an evening ceremony at the school. Lions District Governor, Dr. Stephen Polezonis, and other Lions officers were guest speakers. The 60 Leos are led by co-advisors, Claudia Mossman and Robin Waring. New Hartford Lion Jim Creamer, a veteran in forming Leo clubs, is liaison.

As a club, these Leos are unique, because they are also the entire Student Council. They made a group decision to become Leos to declare their commitment to service. Ms. Mossman is Assistant Principal and Ms. Waring teaches 9th grade social studies.

Service Projects

The club’s first service project was parking cars for the Lions September Flea Market at Brodie Park. In November they filled 25 Turkey Baskets with enough donated food and trimmings to create complete Thanksgiving dinners. The baskets went to families and senior citizens in need in New Hartford, Barkhamsted, Colebrook, Norfolk, and in Otis, Mass. In December, they collected $5,000 for gift cards to help local families buy gifts and food.

Coming up on March 16, during the Lions annual Antiques & Collectibles Show at NWR7, the Leos will focus on several more vital roles. Under guidance of an ophthalmologist, some Leos will assist Lions in Free Eye Screenings, which are being offered for the first time. Others will hone their event management skills by serving as “runners,” helping vendors on setup and knockdown, and assisting in awarding door prizes. (To take advantage of the eye screening, you do not have to go into the show. Please call 860-489-8656 for details.)
