Text Box: NEW HARTFORD LIONS CLUB
2010 Scholarship Awards Program
March 16, 2010

The New Hartford Lions Club invites high school seniors who live in the town and plan to attend post-secondary training or education programs next year to apply for a scholarship award. Seniors at Northwest Regional #7 High School or Oliver Wolcott Technical High School can get the application form from their school guidance counselors. Other seniors can download it from the Lions Club web site: www.newhartfordctlions.org or pick it up at the two libraries in New Hartford. The Club must receive students’ completed forms by May 1st to be eligible for consideration. The form includes instructions. Question may be directed to the school guidance counselors or applicants can call the phone number on the form for more information.

The New Hartford Lions Club awarded scholarships of $1,000 each to six graduating high school seniors in 2009. The success of the Club’s spring and early summer fundraisers will determine the amount available for the 2010 scholarship awards. The Club’s Scholarship Committee will notify those chosen to receive awards in early June and will distribute the checks at a ceremony on Monday, June 28th.

In 2009, the New Hartford Lions Club also donated funds to families in need, local food banks, and civic projects. For example, the Club purchased a defibrillator for New Hartford’s Brodie Park. New Hartford Lions contributed additional monies to eyesight initiatives, a historic priority of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service club organization founded in 1917 with more than 1.3 million members in about 200 countries around the globe.

Northwest Regional #7 School is home to a student ‘Leos’ Club that gets youth involved with volunteering. Leos contribute their time to a wide variety of projects including local Lions Club fundraisers. The name Leo comes from the concepts of ‘leadership’, ‘experience’ and ‘opportunities’ that students are exposed to through their community service activities. Regional #7 High school Principal, Wayne Conner, is a member of the New Hartford Lions.
